Feeding your Bub

The best way to give children a healthy start in life is to ensure that they are fed a balanced diet. Here are a few guidelines from our Nutritionist, Leanne Cooper, to consider when feeding your Bub…

A BALANCED DIET


By the time your Bub turns one, they should be eating a wide variety of healthy foods, including fruit, vegetables, calcium-rich foods (full cream milk, cheese, yoghurt), whole grains, protein-rich foods (meat, eggs, lentils), and a small amount of healthy fats.

AVOID ADDITIVES


It is said that by the time a child turns 17 they are likely to have consumed their own weight in food additives. Much of todays processed foods are loaded with additives and preservatives to artificially enhance their flavour, texture, appearance and shelf-life. Unfortunately, children's food often contain the most since they are attracted to bright colours and sweet tastes. Many additives are known to have negative effects on some children, including throwing tantrums, becoming lethargic and causing headaches. There are no additives in any of Bubs products.

LIMIT SALT & SUGAR


There is no need to add salt or sugar to bub’s cooking. A high salt-sugar diet can lead to childhood obesity, tooth decay and high blood pressure. We like to think Bubs recipes are testimony to how food can still taste scrumptious without adding any salt or sugar. There is no salt or sugar in any of Bubs products.



CHOOSE ORGANIC


Try to buy Australian Certified Organic whenever possible to minimise their little bodies being exposed to pesticides and other agriculture chemicals. It will also help to create a sustainable future for your children's children. 



NO GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS


GM foods are harmful to our health and to the environment. There are also concerns that GMOs are causing allergic reactions in susceptible people, particularly in children. Many foods on our supermarket shelves contain imported GM ingredients, and GM corn, soybeans, potatoes and canola have been approved for production in Australia. The easiest way to avoid them is to buy organic since industry guidelines do not allow any form of genetic engineering. 



DRINK WATER


Once your Bub starts solids, you will need to supplement breast milk &/or infant formula with water to keep them well hydrated. Water is the simplest and most pure drink you can give them. Remember, once you introduce something new, like juice or cordial, it is hard to go back. But whilst they don’t know there are in fact other options, they won’t know to want them. Hopefully by the time they can work it out on their own, they will be accustomed to only needing water to quench their thirst. Try different types of bottles or cups to see which one encourages them to drink the most. If you do give them juice, opt for unsweetened pure fruit juice that has been diluted with water.

READ YOUR LABELS


Take time to read the fine print on ingredient lists and nutritional tables so you know exactly what it is you are feeding your baby. Unfortunately, few manufacturers list all of their ingredient percentages. Also look out for fillers, thickeners and high levels of water. Sadly, just because something is called banana custard doesn’t actually mean it is made from real banana.
